Day 11 - Leaving Yulara today for the CSR

Date:
Monday, July 1, 2024

Started the morning on track to meeting everyone at 8:30. In fact we would have had enough time to go up and buy a hot drink. Then we couldn't engage the rear drawer lock. Pulled out the toolbox and spent 15 minutes trying to fix it or jerry rig a solution. The person camping beside us noticed our dilemma and came over to help. Turns out he was a mechanic and was able to identify the issue and devise a fix.  2 minutes later we could lock the drawer. Consequently we were the last to arrive at the meeting place and we were 2 minutes late.

Only planning to drive 340kms today. There is a stiff breeze today and apparently a cold front has come up from Antarctica, so whilst the thermometer says 11 degrees it feels much much colder. Beanies and gloves cold.

By 10:30am we are off the bitumen and tyres pressures were lowered to 30psi. We will be on the dirt for most of the next 26 days.

Stopped at Lassiter's Cave, Len Beadell Tree and Len Beadell Marker. We were 10km north of the least populous place in Australia - Centroid 14

Staying overnight at Warakurna Roadhouse.

Had a great evening sitting around the campfire.

Considerable time was spent working out what time it was. The Roadhouse was normally on Central Daylight Time but has recently changed to Western Standard Time. Some people's watches and phones automatically changed to WST and some changed to CDT (1.5 hrs different). The time was important as we wanted to catch the weather balloon lift off in the morning as well as refuel.
