Day 12 - Too many prawns
Got up this morning to ice on the canvas. The breeze is still from Antarctica so quite cold.
Warakurna Roadhouse is quite a nice spot and has Telstra reception. Showers and toilets and apparently the Roadhouse does hot toasties.
Plan this morning is to watch the weather balloon lift off from Giles weather station, see Len Beadell's grader and then refuel and buy breakfast before heading off to Chookla - around 400kms. Unfortunately due to the time zone change we missed the balloon launch.
Stopped for morning tea at a waterhole. Unfortunately, it's appears as if a camel fell into the large one so the water was all manky - normally the water is clear and potentially drinkable. We also saw a herd of camels near the road.
We've discovered that we can't take our green frozen prawns into WA so tonight we are sharing dinner with Fab and Sabine as we have 3 meals of garlic prawns to eat.
Stopped at Warburton Roadhouse - such a contrast to Warakurna Roadhouse. Here the toilets and camping area is behind locked gates and razorwire.
Due to the time zone change, we were very late to camp, arriving half an hour after dark which meant we were driving west into the setting sun on gravel dirt road with much dust. In the middle of that we had to pass 2 wide load trucks. When we were nearly at camp an injured dingo stopped in the middle of the road in front of us.
Camp tonight is behind locked gates which is very strange. After arriving into camp, we quickly setup and cooked all our prawns (1 kg) and shared dinner with Fabrizio and Sabine. They supplied the veggies and rice and we also supplied the cocktails. It was very interesting sitting around and chatting with them during and after dinner.
Tomorrow is supposedly a shorter drive - with dinner at a pub and our last opportunity for hot showers for 22 days.
