Day 21 - A day of repairs
Left the campsite at 830am again this morning and headed towards Lake Disappointment. Crossed over Savoury Creek on the way which was quite spectacular.
Made it to Lake Disappointment around mid morning, which is a dry salt lake bed a bit like Lake Eyre. We parked up all the cars in a line for some good group photos which our guide Wylie took, as well as individual car photos too. We walked out onto the lake, which had a very thin crust of salt which easily broke through to the mud below.
We all took a vote to bypass Well 20, as it was a 10km drive each way to see it, and Wylie said it was just a star picket and sheet metal trough. This meant we would arrive at our overnight campsite of Georgia Bore an hour earlier than planned.
On the way to the bore, one of the convoy behind us called out that there was some metal on the road. I immediately knew that it was one of our camper tie downs, as I had adjusted them this morning, and didn't have time to refit the cable tie to it. This was the one which had fallen off on the track. Luckily no one in the end of the convoy behind us had hit it, which could have caused some serious damage to tyres or cars.
There were quite a few more sand dunes today, and also plenty of corrugations to negotiate. We arrived at camp around 245pm, and Wylie mentioned that his car was feeling strange to drive and like he was driving with the handbrake on. When we looked at the rear tyres, the drivers side seem to be sitting further back than the passenger side. On closer inspection, the rear axle on the drivers side had moved back about 7cm. Probably from the corrugations or the many bumps or ruts in the road. It ended up that to fix it, we would need to jack up the car on its springs to take weight of the axle, and try to pull it forward using a winch. The repair ended up taking around 4 hours, with many of the guys lending either a hand or equipment. Only time will tell tomorrow if the repair was successful.
Leanne noticed in one of our under tray boxes, that a screw had fallen out. Michael checked and found that actually 2 screws had fallen out, but we could only find one of them.
Michael tried to replace the screws, but it looked like the holes had been stripped and the screws didn't fit anymore. We will need to keep an eye on this as we traverse more corrugations in the days to come.
Most of us took the opportunity at the bore to have a shower, which was very nice, and we also topped up our water tanks, using our new filter on the bore water before putting it in our tanks. They filtered water tasted pretty good.
Michael cooked chicken stir fry for dinner tonight, as Leanne wasn't feeling too well this evening. We finished the evening around the campfire as usual.
