Day 40 - Palm trees

On Arthur's recommendation we decided to go to Palm Valley today. Another couple who camped beside us at Hermannsburg recommended booking a camp site as it gets very busy - so we booked camp site 10 - on the river. Not disappointed.

The drive to the campsite was 4WD but nothing really difficult - we drove down river beds and beside waterholes through the red cliffs. It was spectacular.

After the campsite there is another 4km drive (that takes 45 minutes!!) down to Palm Valley. This was a bit more difficult 4WDing - sometimes needing low range and navigating rock steps and sometimes trying to work out which way the road actually was. Worth the drive. We did a small walk along Palm Valley - where we saw lots of rockholes, some filled with lots of water and small fish, and red palm trees and red grass. The rock walls were an amazing colour and embedded into them were layers of river stones and shells showing how the area was formed a long time ago.

After our walk we drove back to the campsite, and setup camp on the banks of the river and sat and watched the sun set behind the red hills.
