Day 42 - Touring

Date:
Thursday, August 1, 2024

A slow start this morning. We didn't leave the caravan park until nearly 11am. Heading off to the West MacDonnell Ranges today.

We visited Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm (not part of the National Park). It is run by the local Indigenous people and offers campsites, a cafe and walks through the chasm. It is a very pretty setup and proves that the Aboriginal people can make things work for them, if they really want it.

We also stopped at Point Howard Lookout, great views and also a free 24 hour campsite, with some great spots to use for camping. We ventured on to Ellery Creek Big Hole, another spectacular spot, with a great waterhole for swimming, if you are game enough to venture into the very cold water. Neither of us did though.

As it was after 330pm, we decided to head to Neil Hargraves lookout, which was supposed to also be a free 24 hour campsite. Another very spectacular spot, and there was no one else here, so we decided to camp here tonight, and then continue on with the rest of the West MacDonnell Ranges tomorrow. Close to dark, a few other campers turned up.

We didn't setup camp straight away, but took some time to sit, have a drink and enjoy the view. It was a great night for stargazing too, so Leanne decided to try some astrophotography, and even managed to catch a shooting star, in some of her photos.
